Yannick & Jolene Preshoot - Mumbai Wedding Photographer

Yannick & Jolene will soon tie the knot. The first time when Jolene mentioned Yannick's name I thought that she must be getting married to a Persian or an Egyptian guy. I felt this more so because she works in the middle east (see my sometimes my imaginations runs wild :P). Supposedly his super cool parents named him after a Tennis player.
They both are childhood sweethearts, just that they dint know this at that time. Only when the geographical distance between them widened, they realised that both couldn't live without each other. On a early Sunday morning these guys were sportive enough to dress up and drive almost 45k + kms to do this shoot and I am super excited to shoot their wedding :)
I always encourage my clients to go for a preshoot because:
a) We get to know each other well and that makes a ton of difference how I look at things on ur wedding day and capture them...trust me this is true and its coming from the horses mouth.
b) As a couple its very rare that you will have any professionally captured photos other than that which is taken on ur wedding day. This is a chance to have some nice non wedding couple pictures.
c) Wedding preparations can be crazy sometimes and sometime even the most awesome couple can have their moments and possibilities of some sparks flying. This 1-2 hrs is a good chance to have so 'US' time and I can capture the magic between u guys.
d) Lastly some awesome pictures of you both are a cool way to announce to your family and friends that you are soon getting hitched.

Its a lot of catching up to do in blogging front I will start with the wedding of Steven & Preeti. A wonderful and uber photogenic couple. Steven works as a branding manager for a A list company and hence for him photographs and video of his wedding where of utmost importance. I love such clients and they make my job so much easier.
Steven and Preeti got married on a beautiful sunny day. Despite the fact that the monsoons had stretched itself a wee bit more it was bright and sunny. These love birds wanted to leave no stones unturned. I love it when couple are very hands on and wanted to add their own personal touch to their D-day. Steven and Preeti made sure every little aspect of the wedding had some sort of personal touch involved right from their wedding preparation to the favours given out to the guests at the end of the wedding.

Roce Ceremony - Mumbai Wedding Photographer

Roce (pronounced as rose) is an important ceremony performed on the previous evening of the wedding day. In this ceremony a ritual hot water bath with anointing of oil and application of pure coconut juice is taken by the groom/the bride. This signifies the last bath that the bride or the groom will be taking in their bachelorhood/spinsterhood. With the ceremony of 'roce' the wedding celebration really begins. Both bride and bridegroom have to undergo this ceremony in their respective homes.

I will be frank here and say that this was the first roce ceremony for me although I have quiet a few manglorean/goan friends. Needless to say I really had fun shooting this unique ceremony. I wanted to capture the true essence of this ceremony and hence went complete documentary style :)

Every year around my birthday I have this tendency to make some drastic steps that brings about a new me (at least some part of new me) . Two years back out of whim I went and got my hair poker straight. I spent a whole day , morning to evening at the salon getting ma hair freaking straight. At a time where I really wanted to never look at the mirror and see myself I thought getting a new look should do the trick. Guess what it did at least temporarily.

Last year it was all about enjoying my birthday. Trust me guys since I was 23 I always had this 'ooo am getting old syndrome' Guess what I breezed through the last one. Phew and yes also left a lot of the emotional baggage I was carrying around.

This year its all about getting the oomph back. Seriously know no clue what that is but I thought a pair of aviators should fall into that category. The story goes way back when I was dating a sailor my affair with aviators had started. Trust me men in uniform + aviators is one hot combination. Although that was the case I never thought that I personally could pull off one until this time. Trust u are gonna see more of these flashing ma eyes baby.

Meet the Dhillons - Mumbai Family Portrait Photographer

What are the odds that I get an inquiry for a family portrait sessions and I almost decline it for unavailable dates and then actually going ahead and booking it to a earlier date. What are the odds of having quiet a number of common friends from different walks of life and both of us knowing them some how or the other. But nothing beats the odd that we (the hubby) used to be colleagues in my ex organization. Meet the Dhillions :) (Yah I like their last names) the most happy go lucky baby and the most tech savvy family. Although a small session I definitely had fun shooting this family. BTW these guys should go black and white all the way. They look so fabulous in b/w.

This is the first time I created a story board. Personally I feel this is a very classy way of getting photo prints to frame it and keep it at ur desk.

Kids are the best subjects to photograph. At the same time the toughest subjects too. In order to capture these tiny tots one needs to be one toes. Each session with a kid is as good as an hours work out at the gym trust me on this :)

This is little Ayaan who was not so happy cause he was more interested in the Horsie ride along the Marine Drive. Who could blame him after all? Horses are more interesting than the fat aunty with the weird looking camera hehe...

The heat is unbearable these days in the city. So I guess I have reached an age where almost all of my friends are happily married and now expanding the family :) This just means that its yet another opportunity for me to capture the beauty of motherhood.

So here is my colleague and friend P. The idea of this shoot was not only capture the essence of motherhood but also the beauty of being a mom. I know that in India of such shoots are not that common for various superstitious beliefs. But the glow in the face of a soon to be mother can never be recreated with any kind of makeup and foundation. Its something which is worth freezing. So when P wanted to do the shoot instead of focusing completely on the baby belly I also took some glamorous shots of her.

Ok to set the record straight here we do have a boy version of this picture too. And plan to use which ever is going to be the finally output. (Haha here goes the technical writer me.)

As much as I love the sentiments involved through out a wedding ceremony, one of my favorite part is to capture the bride getting ready for her d-day. No matter how stressful the day is with all the coordinating, planning and running back and forth. This is one of those aha moments when she transforms from an ordinary gal to a bride. Yes the make up. the hair, the dress and the jewelery, all do have a part but the sparkle in her face as she gets ready to be joined with her future husband is amazing.

Are u a WHAT photographer?

"But you are in to weddings yaar!" This is what my friend told me when we were speaking of non wedding photography. I did try to explain to her that am not a wedding photographer, I am more of a people photographer. Weddings are one of the things that I like to do for the sheer fact that there are truck loads of people and emotions.

Thinking back on this conversation I asked myself what kinda photographer are you? Fashion photographer? Wedding photographer? Pet Photographer? Street Photographer? After giving some thought I feel better equipped to answer this question. I am an emotions photographer. Yes am a sucker for emotions ( yah yah the typical cancerian in me speaks again) and I love capturing the emotions. Obviously human beings are the easiest guinea pigs available if one wants to capture emotions. Wedding ritual revolves around emotions (shoot me if am wrong). It has drama, emotion, romance, action (yes sometimes the dishum dishum types too) but most importantly the entire ritual of the wedding (be it any, christian, hindu, muslim) is based on emotions. Hence weddings are my favorite to photograph.

Since no post will be complete without photographs here are 2 which was taken at Dadar Phool (Flower) Market last Sunday.

So this was my 5 minutes of fame in glamor/ fashion photography. Although technically its pretty much the same drill as regular studio setup which I do, fashion / glamor photography is totally a different ball game. It requires a photographer to style, research, conceptualize and much much more. But trust me I loved whatever I have done so far and would love to explore a bit more.

Anyways here is my first celebrity victim. (I should mention that he was very professional and man the guy can pull out poses at such ease that it feels that every move of his is a click worthy)

Hello finally we are towards the end of 2009. This year has been pretty good in many aspects for me even though financially this was not the best year for anyone of us (Arrgghh! damn recession!). Lots of work found me and I have grown leaps and bounds as a photographer. As spoken in my last post, capturing people is my calling and one of the reasons I like people is to catch the real person in between the well rehearsed poses the people give me. Here above is one of them. As I was directing her to pose in a certain way all of a sudden she broke in to laughter and was trying to control herself.

I guess this is my last post for this year so I wish all of you a Happy and Prosperous 2010.

Street is one of my favorite places to photograph especially market places. Its guaranteed to find interesting faces in markets and I also find people are a bit more friendly in a market than any other place (in terms of street).

Feet obsession continues....

A new month n we are almost at the end of the year. Time flies past. Anyways my obsession with hands and (more of) feet continues but with a slight twist. On a friends insistence I started clicking my own feet. Let me tall ya that I come no were close to be able to flaunt my feet. They are chubby and rolly. As kid I hate them. My legs looked like 2 cylindrical blocks to me. But after many click and many poses I finally have come to terms with my feet. A special thanks to AV for pushing me :)

The phase 2 of Wall Project @ Lower Parel

Last Sunday was the phase 2 of the Wall Project. Fighting all my laziness and excuses I dragged myself to Lower Parel because I knew that its just a matter of getting there the rest of the day is gonna be fun and colorful :) Here are a few pictures from the Lower Parel Wall Project:

I think this time around Mumbaikars had a better idea about their artwork and also what to expect at the venue. So was the BMC better prepared. Water tubs were placed at different places. Paints and spray paints were provided along with brushes and old paint cans for mixing paint. I also felt that the graffiti this time was much better than the last time.

Photographing babies can be either the easiest task or it can be the most difficult one. It depends on how the photographer can manipulate the situation to his or her advantage.
Frankly speaking even though I love babies, I have no experience handling babies. Am the mean aunt who was never around ma nephews and nieces. Nevertheless I find babies being pretty comfortable with me ( probably because I am like a bean bag and its super comfy for them when I carry them around LOL)

Here is Bunny aka Annaliese who is the apple of eye for my friend and her hubby. I have photographed this diva hen she was just 3 months old. Now she is 9mnths.
This weekend I captured a lot of pictures of her and her daddy dear was super happy with the results. I also caught a few family pictures so they can blow it up and put it on the walls.

Photographers generally prefer to be behind the camera. I am one of them who become very consious but sometimes its fun to watch these guys engrossed in what they are best at and cpature them.

I like to cook when life is all good. The definition of this phrase "Life is all good" according to me is when I have a solid maid who takes care of most of the cleaning. Currently I am deprived of this luxury. Anyways I like to think that I am fairly a good cook (at least I like to think so) So couple of days back I had made mushrooms and well it turned out OK ( a bit spicy) it was also a good opportunity to try my new 50mm lens.

I think this photo sums up the life of 9-5 working class man in Mumbai city. At the end of the day people are so tired of the routine that catching a wink anywere is a bonus point. Notice the handsfree that is plugged to his ears, its very common sight in Mumbai lcoal trains where u see many people are either talking on the cell phone or listening to music on the radio.

Dash of color in my city

I love my city but there are somethings which I miss out on. One them is color.... Typically greenry can add lots of colors and make the city vibrant. But Mumbai being all urbanized and the real estate is more precious than gold there are not a lot of places to palnt tree (Thats sad...really). Nevertheless Mumbai needs color and The Wall Project is THE solution to add a dash of color.

Dream Home

The real estate prices in Mumbai is unimaginable. Its as bad as New York. I live in the suburbs of Mumbai, a place called Navi (New) Mumbai. Sadly the real estate prices have sky rocketed here too in the recent past. And the current economic conditions haven't really effected the real estate business at all. With such high prices I am not sure if I will ever find my dream house(in my small budget). So the next best thing is to rent a house near these high skyscrapers which cost a bomb and simply admire them.

The weather is acting very silly these days. The clouds play peek-a-boo with the sun. One minute u see these dark grey clouds, giving the feeling that there is gonna be a heavy shower and then the next minute is clear sky with lots of sun. I wish its rains and the weather cools down.

Growing with books

Well I think that some books have to be read at a specific stage in your life, until then you neither value its content nor wil lbe able to relate to what the author wants you to feel. The Glass Palace is one such book. This was gifted to me by A back in 2006. Contrary to what A felt, I found it a bit dry and slow. But 3 yrears later I think I am finally able to see what A wanted me to. I am truly enjoying Amitav Gosh's writing word by word. Thank you A for this lovely gift

Transition from the bachelorette way of living

Its Monday! I am pulling out some of the pics from the archives, of course a bit of post processing does no harm. So after a long extended weekend (4 days wooohoo!) am back. Finally I am ready to give up my freedom and bachelorette state of living. I will have my mom and sis movie in with me from next week. To tell u the truth in the last couple of years I have pulled up my socks and had given the bachelorette way of living. That meant more comfortable home instead of a mattress on the floor and a few pillows and cushions thrown in, a dog (I love her!) as a companion, no regular late mights, serious hobbies (who am i kidding :p). It was a slow transition and hence I think I am not exactly feeling that I am gonna loose my freedom/Independence.

Some patience & tolerance

Lately I find that my temper is flying left, right and center. I am easily ticked off by silly things. I hate this part of me but I tend to have this phase once in a while. Probably its because things are going according to my plans (I hate that! ) adding to the tension of my folks moving in with me is also a factor. Instead of sorting out the issues I am just percolating my frustrations to other things and thats screwing up things all the more. I hope for some good amount of patience and tolerance.

Innocence Lost

With life experiences you loose some of your innocence, vulnerability and naivete. The good thing about this is that you become a stronger person but the down side is that you slowly cease to charm people.

Many Sundays I drag myself out of bed in wee hours of the morning and go shoot with the MWS group. I really enjoy shooting with these guys, because I get to go and shoot places in Mumbai I otherwise would not have gone. I usually prefer to take the train to reach the venue and as I wait for the train this is the view across the platform I get to see lately. I think this summer is all about bougainvilleas. I like it.

I hate it when my routine is messed up

This weekend was sort of crazy, I had an off on Thursday and Friday (due to voting and Labor day) then I had to work on Saturday (I know it sucks).
I hung out with some friends after ages and they goofed around with my camera (seen above is the result), worked my ass off on Sunday since my maid had taken an off.

My post processing secrets

Even the best photo requires a little bit of post processing work. Its like a beautiful lady can always look more beautiful with a dash of makeup. The same way I too have post processing work done on my photos.

There are times when I process my photos using multiple softwares. And I am pretty open to try any new post processing s/w. But most of the time I juggle between Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lighroom and a wee bit of Picasa. Most of the time I process my pictures in Lightroom and Photoshop (OK I confess... more of lightroom maybe). Picasa is more convenient to use for straightening photos, itsy bitsy touch ups and and sometimes for cropping too. I also use GIMP but that's very rare.

So now that the cat is out of the box, tell me what kind of tools do u use for post processing.

Flowers in Mumbai

Thats one thing I miss here in Mumbai but I see a lot of flowers on my way to work lately. Especially bougainvilleas. They look so beautiful and frankly speaking Mumbai needs a splash of color here and there.

I am assuming that since I have been living in this city for a long time now may be one of the reasons I am not that good at flower/tree photography. Last Sunday I went to Sagar Upvan a 12 acre garden in the heart of Mumbai - Colaba, where real estate prices are unbeliably and surreal for a working class person like yours truly. Trust me the definition of gardens in Mumbai is a patch of grass with a few shrubs and yeah some swings and slides for the kids. In comparison this place was far better.

Kotachiwadi - A photographers delight

I walk past the conjusted roads, its a new day,a shop owner throws bucket full of water on the entrance and tiny droplets splash on ur face. unapologetically he picks a broom and starts sweeping away the excess water on hestep. A hard cart with loads os stuff is pulled along, it almost runs over my leg. The nukkad ka paan wala is washing his beetel leaves in a stainless stell bucket. People are busy walking past on either directions. The waiting taxi wala. As he sees me appraching he gets up assuming me to be a potential customer but the moment I open my mouth asking for directions he is slightly irritated and waves his hand and says 'see dha jao' and doesnt bother to answer my counter question 'aur?'.
Futher down I meet an uncle in black shots and stiped t-shirt who helps me to the right direction and even offered to walk with me. Amidst old builds with rotten wodden balconys where all kinds of clothes are hung up to dry an ubrupt turn take u inside a small lane. As you enter the lane u are immediately feel as though u have entered a movie set. The entire place is disconnected from the chaos outside. This is Kothachi Wadi

Khotachiwadi is a heritage village in Girgaon, Mumbai, India. Houses built are made from the old-Portuguese style architecture.
It was founded in the late 18th century by Khot,a Pathare prabhu, who sold plots of land to local East Indian families. There used to be 65 of these houses, now reduced to 28 as old buildings are being pulled down to make way for new skyscrapers. -Wiki

Its seems like a spec of Goa has fell right in the middile of the chaotic Mumbai. I am a bit amazed to realise that there can be beautiful tiny cottages amidst the concrete jungle. Houses have verandhas (let me see when was the last time I saw a house with a verandha....ding ding ding not in bombay until now). Even the space in front of ur gate is decorated with bright mango tile chips, tree barks, stones and huge wodden urns. The bright colors on the walls, the wodden frame blaconys and the bougeinvilla fences truly makes this place a photographers delight.

Say Peas!

Its the season of peas. Peas are often used in Indian vegetarian dishes - Aloo mutter, Mutter Paneer, Mutter pulav and what not. Peeling them is therapeutic (Trust Me). Mandy (my dog) is crazy about them. I see the puppy in her when she bounces all over the living room to catch the fallen peas in her mouth.

Shoot Shoot And Shoot More

Apples are my favourite. Its also good for your health. Remeber the common saying "An Apple a days keeps the doctor away" Its also filling enough to nip you in between hunger pangs. I usually have one every day at work just an hour before lunch to eat less during lunch.

Photography has been a hobby for me since some years. First I used to shoot with the cheap film cameras, then moved to a simple/cheap p&s and stuck to it for 2+ years just to confirm that I still want to do more photography. Then last year I bought my first SLR. Yes there was the initial excitement and there used to be days when I used to drag myself early Sunday morning to the MWS (Mumbai Weekend Shoot), soon the drive to get up early morning wore off (yeah I ain't a morning person). Its too cold to get up in the morning., too much work pressure, guests, social commitments and so on. The excuses were endless. nevertheless I still wanted to photograph but was not sure what when and how. Then I read the Flickr blog where they ask 5 Questions for (Photographer) where most of the photographers seemed to say that shoot shoot and shoot more to improve.

Hence I have started doing so: Shoot everything and anything.I care a damn if people stare (yes am extremely conscious about that). I might not be able to shoot/upload every single day but definitely my target is 5 photos a week.
